How collectors estimate expected value when submitting Pokemon cards for PSA grading — and the common mistakes that wipe out edge.
Grading EV is a rough expected-value estimate: what you might earn on average if you submitted many similar cards under similar conditions. It is not a promise for any single sub. One off-center hit or surface scratch can erase the whole thesis.
The simple EV frame
A practical starting formula:
- Expected exit value ≈ (chance of PSA 10 × PSA 10 price) + (chance of PSA 9 × PSA 9 price) + (lower grades × lower prices)
- Net EV ≈ expected exit value − raw card cost − grading fees − shipping − selling fees
Where people go wrong
- Using peak PSA 10 comps instead of recent liquid sales
- Ignoring PSA 9 outcomes even when population suggests many 9s
- Forgetting sell-side fees on the graded card
- Assuming every NM raw card has the same 10 rate
- Treating EV as certainty instead of a distribution
Use population and recent movers together
Population reports tell you how many high grades already exist. Recent PSA 10 movers show where attention and liquidity are shifting. Neither alone is enough. High pop + falling prices can still trap capital; low pop + rising prices can still fail if centering is weak.

- Is the raw copy truly submission-worthy under good light?
